Safety Officer (CHSO)

Introduction

A civil-engineering contractor specialising in road rehabilitation, road construction, bridge construction, and infrastructure development is seeking an experienced Safety Officer for a major roads and bridge project in Mahikeng.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement, monitor, and maintain the project Health and Safety Plan.
  • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations.
  • Conduct daily site safety inspections and audits.
  • Identify hazards, conduct risk assessments, and implement controls.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses and prepare corrective-action reports.
  • Conduct toolbox talks, safety inductions, and awareness training.
  • Monitor employees, subcontractors, visitors, and contractor Health and Safety Files.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness, drills, and first-aid arrangements.
  • Maintain statutory registers, legal appointments, permits, and safety documentation.
  • Liaise with the client, engineer, Department of Employment and Labour, and regulators.
  • Monitor environmental, health, and safety compliance and promote continuous improvement.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • National Diploma or recognised qualification in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • SACPCMP registration as a Construction Health and Safety Officer.
  • Valid First Aid certificate; Fire Fighting and Incident Investigation certificates are required.
  • Valid driver's licence.
  • At least 18 years' experience as a Safety Officer on major civil-engineering or construction projects.
  • Extensive road construction, bridge construction, earthworks, layerworks, structural concrete, stormwater, and civil-infrastructure experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the OHS Act, Construction Regulations, and applicable South African standards.
  • Strong communication, leadership, report-writing, organisational, and computer skills.
  • Willingness to work away from home for the project duration.
