Safety Officer (CHSO)
Introduction
A civil-engineering contractor specialising in road rehabilitation, road construction, bridge construction, and infrastructure development is seeking an experienced Safety Officer for a major roads and bridge project in Mahikeng.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement, monitor, and maintain the project Health and Safety Plan.
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations.
- Conduct daily site safety inspections and audits.
- Identify hazards, conduct risk assessments, and implement controls.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses and prepare corrective-action reports.
- Conduct toolbox talks, safety inductions, and awareness training.
- Monitor employees, subcontractors, visitors, and contractor Health and Safety Files.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness, drills, and first-aid arrangements.
- Maintain statutory registers, legal appointments, permits, and safety documentation.
- Liaise with the client, engineer, Department of Employment and Labour, and regulators.
- Monitor environmental, health, and safety compliance and promote continuous improvement.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- National Diploma or recognised qualification in Occupational Health and Safety.
- SACPCMP registration as a Construction Health and Safety Officer.
- Valid First Aid certificate; Fire Fighting and Incident Investigation certificates are required.
- Valid driver's licence.
- At least 18 years' experience as a Safety Officer on major civil-engineering or construction projects.
- Extensive road construction, bridge construction, earthworks, layerworks, structural concrete, stormwater, and civil-infrastructure experience.
- Thorough knowledge of the OHS Act, Construction Regulations, and applicable South African standards.
- Strong communication, leadership, report-writing, organisational, and computer skills.
- Willingness to work away from home for the project duration.
