Product Developer

Introduction

A leading consumer products company in Johannesburg is seeking a commercially minded and proactive Product Developer to join its growing product development team.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the full product lifecycle, from concept creation and sourcing through to branding, packaging, manufacturing, and retail launch. The successful candidate will work closely with suppliers, manufacturers, designers, and internal stakeholders to develop innovative products that are sold through leading retailers across South Africa and selected international markets.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop new product ideas, concepts, and category opportunities.
  • Conduct market research into consumer trends, retail movements, social media trends, and international product developments.
  • Manage the end-to-end product development process from concept through to production and retail launch.
  • Coordinate multiple product development projects across various brands and product categories.
  • Liaise with local and international suppliers and manufacturers regarding quotations, product specifications, samples, production schedules, and lead times.
  • Source new products, manufacturing partners, and commercial opportunities.
  • Coordinate packaging development with designers and suppliers to ensure brand consistency and product appeal.
  • Review product samples, artwork, packaging, mock-ups, and revisions to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Manage project timelines, approvals, and launch schedules to ensure products are delivered on time.
  • Monitor project progress and proactively resolve issues that may impact production or launch deadlines.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, manufacturers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Assist with supplier meetings, factory visits, international trade shows, and market research activities when required.
  • Support continuous product innovation and identify opportunities to improve existing product ranges.


Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Previous experience in Product Development, Product Management, Sourcing, Procurement, Project Management, Retail, or a related commercial environment.
  • Strong organisational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and supplier relationship management skills.
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to identify market opportunities and consumer trends.
  • Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to work proactively and independently.
  • High attention to detail with excellent planning and follow-through abilities.
  • A genuine interest in consumer products, branding, retail, sourcing, and innovation.
  • Experience working with international suppliers or manufacturers will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of product development processes, packaging, and manufacturing is advantageous.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally when required.
