Locum Veterinarian

We are seeking an experienced and registered Locum Veterinarian to provide veterinary leadership, oversight, and technical expertise across animal production, research, and diagnostic environments. This is a fixed-term, two-month contract opportunity suited to a highly skilled veterinary professional with experience in laboratory animal welfare, quality systems, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide veterinary oversight to ensure the highest standards of animal health, welfare, ethics, and regulatory compliance.
• Manage laboratory animal units, quality control functions, and animal care operations.
• Lead and oversee animal ethics compliance and institutional standards.
• Ensure adherence to veterinary regulations, biosafety standards, and legislative requirements.
• Manage and monitor GLP/GMP quality and operational systems.
• Interpret quality control testing results and oversee validation and corrective action processes.
• Conduct routine health and welfare inspections of laboratory animals and poultry.
• Prescribe and ensure availability of veterinary medicines.
• Support and supervise veterinary procedures, including blood collection and necropsy.
• Develop, review, and implement SOPs to ensure compliance and ethical standards.
• Liaise with research institutions and external stakeholders on veterinary and scientific matters.
• Deliver staff training and competency assessments in line with veterinary standards.
• Respond to after-hours veterinary emergencies when required.

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc/MVMCh or equivalent)
• Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC)
• Valid driver’s licence
• Minimum 5 years’ post-qualification veterinary experience
• Supervisory or management experience advantageous
• Experience working with laboratory animals, poultry, equine and/or sheep advantageous
• Strong understanding of GLP/GMP, biosafety, quality control, animal welfare, and veterinary ethics
