Health and Safety Officer - Manufacturing
Role Overview
A hands-on Health and Safety Officer is required in Blackheath, Cape Town, to support health and safety compliance across operational sites. The role coordinates daily safety activities, maintains documentation and registers, conducts inspections, supports training and inductions, and follows up on corrective actions.
Responsibilities
- Maintain health and safety documentation, statutory registers, and compliance records.
- Conduct workplace inspections and identify hazards and non-compliance.
- Assist with risk assessments, safe-work procedures, and controls.
- Monitor PPE requirements and employee compliance.
- Coordinate safety inductions, toolbox talks, and employee training.
- Maintain records for medical surveillance, training, inspections, equipment, and incidents.
- Assist with incident and near-miss investigations and follow corrective actions.
- Coordinate emergency procedures, fire drills, and evacuation exercises.
- Monitor chemical registers, Safety Data Sheets, spill kits, and waste records.
- Ensure contractors meet site health and safety requirements.
- Coordinate inspection, servicing, and certification of safety equipment and machinery.
- Support Injury on Duty administration and travel between sites when required.
Requirements
- Grade 12 or Matric.
- SAMTRAC or a recognised Health and Safety qualification is preferred or required.
- Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and relevant regulations.
- Previous Health and Safety experience, preferably in manufacturing, engineering, warehousing, chemicals, or a similar environment.
- Experience with inspections, risk assessments, safety files, incident reporting, and corrective actions.
- Strong administration, record keeping, and communication skills.
- Computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel between sites.
