Jobs in Manufacturing

Electronics Engineer - Bryanston

The Electronics Engineer role is responsible for designing, installing, integrating, testing and commissioning third-party on-board ITS equipment on public transport vehicles and related field infrastructure (e.g. BRT stations and route equipment). The role ensures that all on-board devices integrate correctly with  back-end ITS systems via the required communication protocols and interfaces with the bus electronic systems, and that the full solution is operational, reliable, and compliant with client requirements.

Working under the general direction with minimal guidance from the Operations Manager, the Electronics Engineer will work collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team and undertake the following responsibilities:
Customer-facing technical delivery
- Engage directly with public sector clients, operators, vehicle suppliers and field teams to define on-board equipment requirements, installation constraints, and acceptance criteria.
- Provide technical guidance during implementation and support project stakeholders through testing and commissioning phases.
On-board ITS integration (core focus)
- Design and deliver the on-board integration of third-party ITS devices with the vehicle electrical and electronic environment (bus electronics, power, interfaces, mounting constraints).
- Source, evaluate and recommend suitable third-party ITS devices (e.g., cameras, speakers, vehicle units, communication devices, sensors) and prepare technical specifications for procurement.
- Ensure the third-party devices integrate with the back-end control centre using the required communication protocols and data interfaces.
- Support configuration and commissioning of on-board ITS devices, including firmware setup, parameter configuration and software tools required to make devices operational.
- Perform firmware/software validation testing on third-party devices to ensure compatibility with on-board and back-end systems.
- Use diagnostic utilities and logs to troubleshoot device communication issues, including interface errors between third-party equipment, vehicle electronics, and back-office systems.
- Assist with software version control and upgrade planning for on-board devices (firmware releases, patching, rollback planning, and stability verification).
Testing, commissioning and operational readiness
- Perform integration testing and commissioning of on-board equipment and ensure the complete system is operational end-to-end.
- Test provided bus software in combination with installed third-party devices to validate correct behaviour, performance and stability in the live vehicle environment.
- Conduct on-site inspections of installation activities and verify workmanship and compliance with project requirements.
Field infrastructure installation (BRT stations / route equipment)
- Design and oversee the installation of field equipment such as cameras, speakers and other ITS infrastructure at BRT stations and along the route.
- Design and/or specify brackets, mounting solutions and installation layouts to ensure safe, secure and maintainable installations in public environments.
Standards, documentation and quality
- Ensure installation, maintenance and operations conform to applicable standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical/electronic specifications and technical drawings.
- Maintain documentation for installation, wiring, testing, commissioning, and operational handover.
- Coordinate and support quality assurance requirements across stakeholders.
Training and collaboration
- Support skills transfer and training of client technical teams, project staff and technicians as required.
- Work with a variety of technicians, installers and contracted staff to ensure delivery success.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or closely related field).
- 4+ years relevant experience in engineering delivery, including installation and commissioning of electronic systems (transportation systems experience is advantageous).
- Proven experience with installation of electrical/electronic equipment on vehicles.
- Strong understanding of electronics fundamentals (power, wiring, signal integrity, connectors, grounding, protection)
- Experience working with embedded systems, on-board firmware, and device configuration/diagnostic tools in a transport, automotive, CCTV, telematics, or industrial electronics environ.
- Highly computer literate
Comfortable working across both hardware and software domains, including firmware-level troubleshooting and field diagnostic
