Electrical Engineer - Papua New Guinea (INTERNATIONAL POSITION)
Role Purpose
The Electrical Manager is responsible for the implementation, management, and continuous improvement of safe, reliable, and efficient electrical systems across all operational facilities. The role oversees low-voltage (LV) and high-voltage (HV) electrical infrastructure, power generation systems, preventative maintenance programmes, electrical projects, and operational reliability initiatives.The successful candidate will lead the Electrical Department, ensuring the effective operation of generators, switchboards, distribution systems, and backup power infrastructure while driving electrical safety, compliance, operational efficiency, and future expansion projects.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Operations Management
- Lead and manage all electrical operations across the business.
- Oversee both LV and HV electrical infrastructure and ensure operational reliability.
- Ensure uninterrupted power supply to operational facilities through effective maintenance and monitoring.
- Manage electrical load balancing and power consumption across all operational sites.
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance programmes to minimise downtime and maximise equipment performance.
- Ensure operational facilities maintain reliable backup power capabilities.
Power Generation and Infrastructure
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and performance of diesel generators, backup power systems, and associated infrastructure.
- Monitor generator performance and reliability to ensure operational continuity.
- Support the implementation and expansion of renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives, including solar power projects.
- Ensure electrical systems are scalable to support future operational growth.
Project and Capital Management
- Manage electrical CAPEX projects, including new installations, upgrades, refurbishments, and infrastructure expansions.
- Coordinate electrical requirements for new developments, processing facilities, and construction projects.
- Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and according to technical specifications.
- Oversee procurement activities related to electrical equipment and infrastructure projects.
Team Leadership and Development
- Lead, motivate, and develop the Electrical Department team.
- Allocate daily work activities and manage departmental resources effectively.
- Conduct performance management, coaching, training, and employee development initiatives.
- Support succession planning and skills development within the department.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all applicable electrical safety standards, regulations, and company policies.
- Enforce lockout/tagout procedures and safe working practices.
- Conduct regular inspections and audits of electrical installations and equipment.
- Maintain compliance documentation and records for audits and inspections.
- Drive a zero-harm safety culture throughout the department.
Contractor and Stakeholder Management
- Manage external electrical contractors and service providers.
- Monitor contractor performance to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and operational requirements.
- Liaise with suppliers regarding equipment, services, and technical support.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal departments and external stakeholders.
Maintenance and Asset Management
- Ensure preventative maintenance schedules are implemented and completed effectively.
- Maintain accurate records for generator servicing, thermal imaging inspections, electrical maintenance, and compliance activities.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify opportunities for reliability improvements.
- Ensure all electrical assets are maintained according to operational and statutory requirements.
Energy Management and Continuous Improvement
- Monitor electrical consumption and identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency.
- Develop and implement initiatives to reduce energy costs and improve sustainability.
- Investigate and implement new technologies and best practices to improve operational performance.
- Support continuous improvement programmes across all electrical systems and infrastructure.
Reporting and Administration
- Maintain accurate maintenance, compliance, and operational records.
- Prepare reports on electrical performance, maintenance activities, project progress, and energy usage.
- Monitor departmental budgets and expenditure.
- Provide management with regular updates on operational performance and project status.
- Perform any other reasonable duties as required by management.
Role Requirements
Qualifications
- Red Seal Electrical Certification or equivalent recognised electrical trade qualification.
- Electrical Licence preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in an electrical management or supervisory role.
- Strong industrial electrical experience involving generators, switchboards, distribution systems, and electrical infrastructure.
- Experience managing electrical installations, maintenance programmes, and infrastructure projects.
- Experience working with large-scale generator systems (1000 KVA and above) will be advantageous.
- Experience within agricultural, manufacturing, processing, industrial, or production environments preferred.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong understanding of LV and HV electrical systems.
- Knowledge of power generation systems and backup power infrastructure.
- Experience with preventative maintenance planning and asset management.
- Understanding of electrical compliance standards and safety regulations.
- Knowledge of energy management and efficiency initiatives.
- Familiarity with project management principles and CAPEX project execution.
