Drupal CMS Developer
Role Overview
Design, develop, customise and continuously maintain enterprise-grade content-management systems and decoupled digital web platforms. The role sits at the intersection of backend PHP development, API design and digital delivery, with responsibility for custom modules, complex content schemas, platform performance, clean code, security and scalability.
Responsibilities
- Architect, develop and maintain secure, high-traffic enterprise Drupal web applications and content-management architectures.
- Build custom Drupal modules using object-oriented PHP and standard Drupal APIs.
- Develop and manage RESTful APIs, JSON:API and GraphQL endpoints for decoupled or headless architectures and third-party integrations.
- Model complex content types, taxonomy hierarchies, custom entity schemas and user-role and permission structures.
- Work with front-end engineers to integrate Twig templates, component libraries and modern JavaScript frameworks.
- Execute performance tuning and caching strategies using reverse proxies, in-memory caching, database indexing and core render caching.
- Own code-quality and security standards, conduct code reviews and manage regular CMS security patch cycles.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, technical estimation, story-point sizing and sprint planning.
- Maintain local and cloud environments using containerised setups and automate deployments through CI/CD pipelines.
- Drive database and configuration synchronisation across development, staging and production environments.
Desired Experience and Qualification
- National Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or related discipline.
- At least five years' commercial experience as a dedicated Drupal Developer on enterprise-scale platforms.
- Professional Drupal development certification is highly preferred.
- Experience in IT Consulting, Telecommunications or Media is advantageous.
- Expert knowledge of PHP 8.x, Drupal Core architecture, Symfony components, Composer and Drush.
- Advanced database design, querying and optimisation with MySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL.
- Hands-on experience with decoupled implementations and APIs consumed by modern front-end frameworks.
- Solid Git workflows, automated testing frameworks and CI/CD deployment pipelines.
- Experience with enterprise project tracking and documentation systems.
- Excellent communication and ability to explain technical CMS constraints to non-technical stakeholders.
