Breeder Department Manager - Papua New Guinea

Role Purpose:
The Breeder Department Manager is responsible for leading and directing the Breeder Department to ensure the production of high-quality hatching eggs in line with production targets.
The role focuses on continuous improvement of parent stock (Meat & Layer) and grandparent (Meat) performance, ensuring operational efficiency and alignment with industry standards. The incumbent will oversee all breeder farm activities, ensuring optimal flock health, biosecurity compliance, and overall production performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Management
  • Oversee placements, flock grading, selection, transfers, feeding, and vaccination programmes.
  • Ensure male and female management programmes are executed effectively and on schedule.
  • Maintain optimal egg hygiene and handling processes.
  • Monitor and evaluate flock performance against industry standards.
  • Identify flock-related issues and implement corrective actions to prevent losses.
Flock Health & Biosecurity
  • Implement and monitor biosecurity programmes to prevent disease outbreaks.
  • Conduct regular farm inspections, including necropsies and examinations.
  • Ensure proper shed cleanouts and preparation processes are completed on time.
  • Liaise with veterinarians regarding flock health and mortality concerns.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting
  • Track key production metrics including mortality, uniformity, weights, and chick output.
  • Prepare and analyse reports and operational data.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives based on performance trends.
Feed & Resource Management
  • Oversee weekly feed planning and coordinate with relevant departments to ensure availability.
  • Ensure efficient use of resources to meet production targets.
People Management
  • Manage and lead a workforce of approximately 230 staff.
  • Oversee recruitment, training, performance management, and disciplinary processes.
  • Assign, direct, and monitor daily tasks and responsibilities.
  • Address employee concerns and resolve operational issues effectively.
Project & Stakeholder Management
  • Coordinate and manage capital expenditure projects related to breeder and GP farms.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with hatcheries, suppliers, service providers, and internal departments.
  • Engage with local and international consultants to improve flock performance and operational strategies.
General Administration
  • Prepare and analyse reports, records, and operational data.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as required by management.
Key Performance Indicators:
  • Mortality, uniformity, and weights at transfer in line with industry standards.
  • Chick output (Chicks/HH) in line with production targets.
  • Effective biosecurity implementation and disease prevention.
  • Efficient feed and resource management.
  • Overall farm performance aligned with industry benchmarks.


Minimum Requirements:
Qualifications
  • Degree in Animal Husbandry or Veterinary Medicine.
Experience
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a Breeder or Grandparent farm environment.
  • Proven experience in a managerial role within agriculture or poultry production.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer literacy, including Excel and related systems.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment (walking, standing, lifting).
