Applications Engineer – Mining Safety Technology - Potchefstroom
Role Purpose
The Applications Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, commissioning, and supporting advanced mining safety technology solutions for underground and surface mining operations. The role focuses on translating technical safety systems into practical, site-ready solutions that enhance operational safety and compliance while delivering high levels of technical support and client service.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Assessments and System Design
Conduct on-site technical surveys and needs assessments at mining operations
Design and configure safety technology solutions based on client operational requirements
Develop site-specific system integration plans and technical recommendations
Ensure all solutions align with applicable mining safety legislation and industry standards
Installation, Commissioning and Support
Lead installation, commissioning, and acceptance testing of mining safety systems
Troubleshoot technical and system-related issues during implementation and post-installation phases
Provide ongoing technical support and maintenance assistance to clients
Ensure systems operate effectively within underground and surface mining environments
Client Engagement and Technical Support
Provide technical training to mine personnel and engineering teams
Support the sales team with technical proposals, presentations, demonstrations, and tender submissions
Represent the company professionally at client sites, meetings, and industry events
Build and maintain strong client relationships through effective communication and technical expertise
System Integration and Documentation
Liaise with OEMs and system integrators regarding Level 9 vehicle CAN-bus interfacing
Maintain and update technical documentation, including SOPs, wiring diagrams, commissioning records, and test reports
Ensure all documentation complies with company standards and client requirements
Products and Technologies
Missing Person Locator systems for real-time personnel tracking and emergency response
Collision Avoidance Systems for proximity detection and vehicle intervention
Level 9 Vehicle Interface Systems integrated with OEM and CAN-bus technologies in line with EMESRT design intent

Role Requirements
Degree or Diploma in Electrical, Electronic, or Mechatronic Engineering
3 – 6 years’ experience in a technical applications, systems integration, or field engineering role
Knowledge of South African mining safety legislation, including MHSA, DMR directives, and EMESRT standards
Practical experience with CAN-bus, GNSS, UWB, or RFID-based systems will be advantageous
Experience working within underground mining environments will be highly advantageous
Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Excellent client-facing communication and presentation abilities
Ability to work independently and manage multiple technical projects simultaneously
Willingness to travel extensively to mine sites across Southern Africa
Valid driver’s licence and own reliable transport
